The Best OCR Software on Mac for Everyone. With an easy-to-use interface, the best OCR software can convert any PDF, scanned document, or image file (including picture of business card) in over 40 languages into searchable and editable files in a range of formats for easy editing and sharing. DevonThink Office has built-in OCR. But then again that's only if you want a paperless office document manager to go with your OCR software. It's likely overkill, but if you're currently looking of a method to store all your OCR stuff, it might be work a look. ABBYY Finereader is definitely hard to beat in terms of accuracy and scanning speed. The mark of a good OCR software is it’s ability to scan low quality documents and ABBYY Finereader Pro is probably the best on the market for this. ABBYY specialize in OCR scanning technology so the company generally has a very solid track record in the OCR field. That said, there are many other good options now on Mac though such as Adobe Acrobot Pro and simple but lower quality apps like Prizmo and Picatext.
OCR (or optical character recognition) software basically allows you to take the text or images from file formats like PDF and extract them. Some examples of this software also allow you to convert PDF files to and from other formats, including allowing for conversion into searchable PDF, which allows you to search through your files for specific words or phrases.

Best you can buy
I've used the Finereader Windows version for years, then my windows computer died and i bought a Mac and bought the Finereader Pro for it. the Program works just great as i use it while working for my youth group putting together records of classes they have completed. Works just great. 5 stars isnt enough!
For the price I paid. It's a joke
The way this app is manufactured, sold, and supported, portrays to me the image of a company that is having a hard time to adapt to changing markets and market conditions. This is the most expensive software I own on my Macbook, and it is also the least delivering.
What can I say. If I want to OCR a document quickly, I can't. I have to export it into a file format and save it first. I can't just have a plain text rendering. I am blind, and this feature would be very useful to quickly access the content of PDFs that are not made searchable, or to read regular paper documents without needing to save the actual scan. I can't open any files straight from the Finder, either. Seriously? How much did you have to rush this out? What about batch processing? How about network scanners? What about pasting images? What about recognizing PDFs intuitively, and without having to rebuild one? Anyway. If you think I'm wrong, buy the software and enjoy it. Developer Response,
Dear Sir,
We are sorry to hear that using FineReader caused you much difficulties. We'd like to answer some of the listed questions. To open image from Finder please do the following: Ctrl+Click the image in Finder, tap button to move right- the focus will be on option Open in drop-down menu. Tap button down and click right to select Open With menu. FineReader should be listed in this menu. Batch processing is supported with default Mac OS tool Automator. Scanning through network scanners is supported. Please check if scanning through network scanner works with ImageCapture. If it does, but scanning through network scanner still doesn't work in FineReader please contact our Technical Support via e-mail: [email protected] Thank you for your comments. Best regards, ABBYY Team Hangs on certain documents
I use it frequently to convert many PDF documents at once. Pretty frequently it hangs up and won't continue. It's not intuitive which document it's hung up on so you have to manually do a few documents at a time until you find the specific document. Why would a software program just hang? And why not give the user feedback when it happens?
Developer Response,
Dear Sir or Madam,
Thank you for describing the issue in the comment! To identify the cause we will need additional information. If it is possible, please send us system report with e-mail to [email protected]. If you can share batch of images for which the situation reproduces, it will help us greatly. Any indication of your comment in AppStore will help us identify your message. Helping FineReader process. Generally speaking software could hang for different reasons. For example if there is lack of memory to use or due to a crash. It might be a particular document or several ones opened with FineReader that caused the situation. Showing end-user a feedback requires an action from the application. Especially if crash happened the application is unable to do anything, even show a message to the user. If the situation you face is indeed cause by memory overuse, processing images one by one could be a solution. It could be automated if you receive PDFs for processing during a period of time, not as a batch. We can suggest setting Folder Action. Please find instructions for setting Folder Actions on Mac OS 10.14 https://support.abbyy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005840720-Setting-up-FolderActions-for-ABBYY-FineReader-Pro-for-Mac-macOS-10-14- If assistance is needed, please let us know at [email protected] Best regards, FineReader Team Information
